How to Get the Transcript of an Instagram Video

You can turn the spoken audio in a public Instagram Reel into text without manually replaying and typing the entire video.

People often use “Instagram video” to describe several different formats. ReelToText currently supports one of them: an individual, public Reel with a URL containing /reel/. This guide explains what works, how to transcribe it, and what to check when a link is rejected.

Which Instagram videos can ReelToText transcribe?

Instagram uses different URLs for different types of content. Check the format before you begin.

This narrower scope is intentional: one public Reel goes into each request, and one transcript comes back.

Step 1: Copy the Instagram Reel link

Navigate to the Reel in Instagram.

• On mobile: tap the share icon, then tap Copy link.
• On desktop: open the post menu and choose Copy link.

The copied URL should resemble:

https://www.instagram.com/reel/ABC123/

Do not paste a profile URL, a search page, or a /reels/ collection link. ReelToText validates the address before it starts processing.

Step 2: Paste the link into ReelToText

Open ReelToText, paste the URL into the input, and select Generate Transcript.

The service retrieves the public Reel on the server, extracts its audio in memory, and sends that audio through speech recognition. The browser then receives clean text plus timestamped segments.

How long this takes depends on the source video, provider response times, and current network conditions. Keep the browser tab open while the status indicator is running.

Step 3: Copy or download the result

After the transcript appears, you have four options:

• Copy the visible transcript for use in a note or document.
• Download TXT when you want a plain, editable text file.
• Download SRT when you need timed subtitles for a video editor.
• Download VTT when you need WebVTT captions for a website or compatible player.

The timed formats are useful when the words need to remain aligned with the original video. TXT is simpler for research, summaries, and content repurposing.

What to do if transcription fails

Start with these checks:

1. Confirm the Reel is public. Private content cannot be fetched by an external transcription service.
2. Inspect the URL. It must identify one post with /reel/, not a plural /reels/ collection.
3. Check that the Reel still exists. Deleted, restricted, or unavailable posts cannot be processed.
4. Listen for speech. A silent or music-only video may produce little or no useful text.
5. Try again later after a provider error. Instagram or an upstream media service can temporarily limit requests.

Failed requests do not count against ReelToText's daily success allowance.

Why use a transcript instead of only watching?

Video is convenient for viewing, while text is easier to work with. A transcript lets you search for a phrase, quote a speaker more carefully, translate a passage, create captions, or inspect the structure of a script at your own pace.

It also gives you a useful starting point rather than a finished fact-check. Review names, technical language, and important quotations against the original audio before using them publicly.
