How Instagram Reel transcription works
When you submit a supported public Reel to a transcription tool, three stages happen behind the scenes.
1. Source retrieval and audio handling
The service retrieves the media associated with the individual public Reel. ReelToText processes the necessary audio temporarily on the server; it does not create a permanent user media library.
The Reel must be publicly accessible. Instagram blocks external retrieval of private accounts and private posts.
2. Speech recognition
A speech-recognition model analyzes the audio and predicts the spoken words. It also returns timed segments so the text can be synchronized with the source.
This is probabilistic recognition, not a perfect copy of reality. Clear narration generally produces a more useful result than overlapping speakers, loud music, distortion, or distant voices.
3. Output formatting
The recognized words appear as an on-page transcript. Segment timing is converted into SRT and VTT caption cues, while TXT contains only the readable text.
What affects transcription quality?
There is no honest universal accuracy percentage for every Reel. Quality depends on the source.

An SRT file uses numbered cues and comma-based millisecond timestamps. VTT uses WebVTT syntax and is designed for the web. Both should be previewed and edited before publication.
Privacy and data handling
ReelToText retrieves public content only after a user submits its URL. The service processes media for the active request and returns the transcript to the browser. It does not provide an account-based archive of source videos or generated transcripts.
That means you should copy or download a result before leaving the page. It also means “media not stored” should not be confused with “nothing passes through a server”: server-side retrieval and transcription are necessary to generate the text.
